Ok
just for future ref., it's not just held with cable ties. There are two large screws that go into the unit through the red bracket and cannot be seen or accessed until the red bracket is removed. This is done by undoing the two bolts that are in the boot drip recess and on my car had black plastic covers on the bolt heads. It looks like i might have to splice the new one in to the old ele. cables as there do's not seem to be a plug in connector as the new one has + the cables are different colors.

Can be a bugger to realign if loose thus preventing you from releasing the boot. Not the easiest thing to check given the position of the switch and the solenoid..
Its worth investigating if the boot is jamming, or there is a genuine problem. Things can easily shift in the boot jamming against the gas strut thus preventing the boot opening. Right hand donuts in a suitably large space whilst constantly jabbing the switch has been known to help. There is another way into the boot which if you are stuck can be mailed to you offline..

no it was the solenoid, when i got the boot open, i put a 12mm bolt in the lock to test it and sometimes it would work and other times not. the new solenoid was under £10 so it was a cheap fix, but as you say a bit trick to line up afterwards. i needed a litte person to be in the boot to check it out when i closed the lid but there were none of my kids wanted the job, plus they are not that little anymore.
on a unrelated question do's anyone know what side the bulb in the number plate light faces?
it fell to bits as i was takeing it out, it looks like the bulb should be on the boot side of the holder but it maybe on the number plate side. It gets hot so i was worried about it touching the cut out in the meterial in the boot. has anyone fitted a plastic cover on the inside of the boot so it lights that as well? just a thought.

Hi wheels1,
here is photo of numberplate light from inside boot, mmmm looks as if it' blown! Bulb faces the back of the car.
My solenoid went last week and has been replaced with one from a Renault, that isn't a perfect fit. The one that burnt out is marked - Spall, Corregio, Italy. Is/was yours the same type, and if so where did you get the replacement from?
Cheers Steve

Hi Steve
I got the new one from www.mod-wise.co.uk tel. 01793 770730 and they told me TVR only ever used one type so it sould be right for your car. It cost a total of £8.99 inc post, so a bargain realy.

Just a slight thread resurection...
For future searchers- the boot solenoid can still be bought from Maplin for the princely sum of £7.99 and is described as "Central locking 2 wire actuator" (order no YD79L)
As mentioned on another thread it needs to be wired up the correct way so that it pulls and doesn't push! On my V8 that meant the yellow/green feed from the car matched to the green solenoid lead (+ve) and the black feed from the car matched to blue on the solenoid (-ve). But, given that the solenoid is from China and the car from Blackpool I guess you can't rely on the same being true for everyone so maybe best to orientate the Solenoid by testing across a 12v feed first and using a multimeter to work out the polarity of the feed from the car....
Oh, and the cable ties are only there to hold on the emregency release cable so no need to cut these.
